Section 13: The War Wages On

After defeating Jake “The Snake” Roberts in a Coal Miner’s Glove Match at Halloween Havoc’92, Sting entered the King of Cable Tournament being held by WCW. At the Clash of The Champions in November of ‘92, Sting Wrestled Rick Rude in the Semi-Finals of the Tournament. Three judges were at ringside to determine a winner if the Match lasted for the entire 20 minute time limit. Sting and Rude Wrestled the entire 20 minutes, and the judges declared Sting the winner of the Match. The Finals of the King of Cable Tournament were held at Starrcade ‘92. The Finalists were Sting and Vader. Vader dominated most of the Match with power, and Sting gained control with high flying and power moves. Sting had the Scorpion Deathlock on Vader once, but Vader made it to the ropes. The Match ended when Sting reversed a Flying Body Press attempt by Vader into a Power Slam to get the pinfall. Sting was the winner of the first and only King of Cable Tournament. Earlier on the Card Sting was able to qualify himself for the Battle Bowl Match when he and partner “Dr. Death” Steve Williams won their Tag Match. In Battle Bowl, Sting and Vader fought each other most of the time. They ended up eliminating one another, and they fought until the reach the backstage area. The Great Muta eliminated Barry Windham to win the second annual Battle Bowl. Only a few days after Starrcade ‘92, Vader defeated Ron Simmons to become the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Sting was a top contender to the Title and he wanted a Title Match with Vader. Vader challenged Sting to a Strap Match at Super Brawl III with the Title on the line. Sting accepted. The Match was very brutal. Vader walked away with the win, but Vader suffered some bruised ribs, a cut ear, and some lacerations on his back. After Super Brawl III, WCW headed to Europe for a tour. On March 11, 1993, Sting defeated Vader in a re-Match to win the WCW World Heavyweight Title. Sting was now a Three Time World Heavyweight Champion. Sting’s third reign did not last long. Vader regained the Title on March 17, 1993, with the help of Harley Race. A new challenger to Vader’s Title showed up in WCW by the name of Davey Boy Smith. Smith got his Title Match at Slamboree ‘93: A Legends’ Reunion. Smith won the Match by disqualification, but was on the receiving end of a beating by Vader afterwards. Sting made the save for Smith. When Vader and a returning Sid Vicious decided to team up, Sting and Davey Boy did the same. The team of Sting and Smith were signed to face Vader/Vicious in the Main Event at Beach Blast ‘93. The Match almost ended while Sting and Sid were brawling on the entrance ramp, and Vader hit Smith with a Moonsault. Vader almost got the pinfall, but Sting leaped over the ropes to make the save. Smith caught Vader with a Crucifix to gain the win. Sid would continue to be a problem for Sting for the rest of the summer and part of the fall. A Match was signed between them for Halloween Havoc ‘93. Sting pinned Sid to gain the pinfall when Col. Robert Parker tried to hit Sting with a chair, but accidentally hit Sid. Sting spent the rest of 1993 trying to win the WCW World Tag Team Titles with various partners, but he never succeeded.

Section 14: WCW International Heavyweight Title

Rick Rude entered 1994 as the WCW International Heavyweight Champion. At the end of a Six-Man Cage Match, which saw Sting, Brian Pillman, and Dustin Rhodes take on Rick Rude, Steve Austin, and Paul Orndorff, Rude slammed the cage door in Sting’s face. He then gave Sting a Rude Awakening for good measure. Sting demanded a Title Match with Rude, but Rude declined and said he would never give Sting a Title Shot. WCW returned to England for another tour. WCW decided to hold a European Cup Tournament and Sting was one of the participants. Sting won the first and only WCW European Cup by defeating Kane of Harlem Heat, Ron Simmons, Steve Austin, and in the Finals, Sting defeated Vader. On an episode of WCW Saturday Night, a female fan asked for Rude’s autograph, and he gladly signed it. The piece of paper Rude signed was a contract to Wrestle Sting at Spring Stampede ‘94. Before the match, Harley Race challenged the winner to a Title Match. The Match between Sting and Rude ended when Vader and Race showed up to help Rude. Sting fought both of them off, but Rude caught Sting by surprise. Rude tried his Rude Awakening Finisher, but Sting powered out of it. Race tried to hit Sting with a chair, but hit Rude instead. Sting covered Rude to win the WCW International Heavyweight Title. This made Sting a Four Time World Heavyweight Champion. Two weeks later, Sting lost the Title to Rude in Japan when Rude hit Sting with the Belt and connected with a Top Rope Knee Drop. In that Match Rude suffered a career ending neck injury. WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkle awarded the Title to Sting at Slamboree ‘94, however, Sting refused to accept the Title unless he could defeat Vader on that night. Sting defeated Vader with a Top Rope Splash to become a Five Time WCW World Heavyweight Champion. In June of 1994, WCW decided that there should be one Title recognized as the World Heavyweight Title. WCW took the WCW World Heavyweight Title and the WCW International Heavyweight Title, and unified them as the WCW World Heavyweight Title using the old NWA World Heavyweight Title Belt. Sting and Ric Flair Wrestled at the Clash of The Champions in June of ‘94. Sting almost won the Match, but Ric Flair’s new manager Sherri Martel (acting like she wanted to be Sting’s manager) cost Sting the WCW World Heavyweight Title. Sting wanted revenge, but he would have to wait. Another man stepped into the
picture.

Section 15: Hulk Hogan And More

Upon Hogan’s signing with WCW, a WCW World Heavyweight Title Match was signed with Ric Flair defending the Title against Hogan. The night before Bash At The Beach on WCW Saturday Night, Sting got a WCW World Heavyweight Title Match. Hogan watched the Match from ringside as Sherri caused Sting to win the Match by disqualification and injuring his left eye in the process. The very next night at Bash At The Beach ‘94, Ric Flair dropped the WCW World Heavyweight Title to Hulk Hogan. Sting remained out of action for a couple of weeks, but returned to Wrestle in a Triangle Match at Fall Brawl in September against Vader and The Guardian Angel. The winner of the Match would become the Top Contender to the World Heavyweight Title. Vader won the Match eliminating both men. This would be the closest Sting would come to the World Heavyweight Title for a long time. However, Sting had bigger problems to worry about. Hogan defended his Title successfully against Flair at Halloween Havoc ‘94, but The Butcher, Kevin Sullivan, and Avalanche hoped to take the Belt from Hogan. At the Clash of The Champions in November of ‘94, Sting teamed with Hulk Hogan and Dave Sullivan to defeat The Butcher, Kevin Sullivan, and Avalanche. This was the beginning of Sting’s feud with Avalanche. Sting was signed to Wrestle Avalanche at Starrcade ‘94. The Match ended in a disqualification win for the Stinger. A re-Match was signed for the Clash of The Champions in January of ‘95. Sting won the re-Match against Avalanche with the Scorpion Deathlock. The feud finally came to an end when Sting teamed with Randy Savage to take on Avalanche and Big Bubba Rogers (formerly The Guardian Angel) at Super Brawl V. Sting and Savage won the Match with Sting pinning Avalanche. This Match ended Sting’s feud with Avalanche, but it was only the beginning of a feud with Big
Bubba Rogers.

Section 16: Big Bubba Rogers and The U.S. Title

In the weeks following the Tag Team Match at Super Brawl V, Sting began to feud with Big Bubba Rogers. They signed to Wrestle at the inaugural Uncensored PPV. Sting injured his leg in the middle of the Match, and it ended up costing him the Match. Sting attempted a Body Slam on Rogers, but his leg gave out from under him. Rogers ended up on top of Sting to get the pinfall win. Sting challenged Rogers to re-Match at Slamboree ‘95. This time the Match was a Lights Out Match. Sting got his revenge on Rogers and defeated him with the Scorpion Deathlock. In the meantime, Sting was taking part in a Tournament to crown a new WCW U.S. Heavyweight Champion. Sting defeated Arn Anderson and Paul Orndorff in his first two Matches of the Tournament. Winning those Matches placed Sting in the Finals of the Tournament. The Match was scheduled for the Great American Bash ‘95, and Sting’s opponent was Meng. Sting won his second WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title by defeating Meng with a Jumping DDT. Another re-Match for the WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title between the two was signed for Bash At The Beach ‘95. Sting defeated Meng for a second time to retain the Title. Sting continued to defend his WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title successfully for the next two months. Then in September an old friend would show up. This is when things got really interesting again for the Stinger.

Section 17: Luger’s Return And Flair’s Double Cross

Lex Luger returned to WCW in the fall of ‘95 after a stint in the WWF. Luger did not waste any time in making an impact either. On Luger’s first appearance on Monday Nitro he challenged Hogan to a World Heavyweight Title Match. Hogan accepted and it was signed for the following Nitro. Both men had several chances to win the Match, but the Dungeon of Doom attacked both causing the Match to be a No Contest. Sting and Randy Savage made the save, which set-up the War Games Match at Fall Brawl ‘95. Hogan’s Team, which was scheduled to face the Dungeon of Doom, was suppose to be made up of Hogan, Savage, Sting, and Vader. However, Vader was forced to leave WCW before Fall Brawl ‘95. Sting convinced Hogan would be the best replacement. Hogan was reluctant to allow Luger on the team considering Hogan had been accusing Luger of being a member of the Dungeon of Doom. Hogan gave in and allowed Luger to be the fourth member of the Team. Hogan’s team won the War Games Match when Hogan forced The Zodiac to submit. Another Match on that Card took place that would affect the Stinger. Ric Flair lost to Arn Anderson at Fall Brawl ‘95. In the weeks that followed, Anderson and Brian Pillman would attack Flair at every opportunity. Flair had no where to turn except to the one person in WCW who would help anybody, Sting. Sting agreed to be Flair’s partner in a Tag Team Match against Anderson and Pillman, however, he gave Flair a direct warning, “If you swerve me even the slightest way, I am going to leave you for dead!” The Tag Match was signed for a Nitro in October of ‘95. Sting decided to let Flair Wrestle the first part of the Match alone just to see if he was trust worthy. Sting finally decided to trust Flair so he entered the ring and cleaned house on Anderson and Pillman. Another re-Match was signed for Halloween Havoc ‘95. Ric Flair was injured by Anderson and Pillman before the Match forcing Sting to Wrestle alone. Flair then came to the ring, injury and all, to help Sting. Sting made a hot tag to Flair and Sting got double crossed. The fighting between Flair and Anderson/Pillman, and Flair’s injury was all a plot of the new 4 Horsemen. Sting would get his revenge. Sting and Flair were signed to a Match on Nitro in November of ‘95. Sting won the Match with the Scorpion Deathlock, but he refused to release the hold after the Match. Many different Wrestlers and referees entered the ring, trying to get Sting to release the hold. Lex Luger finally talked Sting into releasing the hold. A week later Sting lost his WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title to Kensuke Sasaki in Japan, but he didn’t let it slow him down.

Section 18: A Dream Match And The World Cup

There was a lot of controversy in WCW that had to do with Sting. Sting was one of the most popular Wrestlers, and he was friends with Lex Luger, who was helping the Dungeon of Doom fight Hogan. Hogan, now wearing black due to The Giant shaving his beard off, accused Sting of working with the Dungeon of Doom. This led to what many considered to be a “Dream Match”. Sting vs Hulk Hogan was signed for the Main Event of Nitro on November 20, 1995. Sting had been waiting for over a year to get this Match, and he took the fight to Hogan. Hogan regained control of the Match, and hit the Big Foot, the prelude to the Leg Drop. Hogan went for the Leg Drop, but Sting rolled out of the way. Sting immediately applied the Scorpion Deathlock on Hogan in the center of the ring. Hogan was near submission, yelling “He is breaking my legs”. Then the Dungeon of Doom interfered in the Match causing it to be ruled a No Contest. Hogan finally believe Sting was not part of the Dungeon of Doom when Sting helped him fight them off. Sting then picked up his unfinished business with Flair at World War III at the end of November. Sting defeated Flair with the Scorpion Deathlock to settle their feud. Sting then participated in the 60 Man Battle Royal that headlined World War III with the winner becoming the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Sting was eliminated when he and Luger eliminated The Giant, but Hogan hit them both from behind eliminating them. Savage ended up winning to become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. At Starrcade ‘95 WCW decided to put its honor on the line against New Japan Pro Wrestling. Seven Matches were signed that would have WCW Wrestlers facing New Japan Wrestlers. The Promotion that won the most Matches would win the World Cup of Wrestling. WCW and New Japan were tied at 3 - 3 heading into the Final Match. Sting was WCW’s representative, and Kensuke Sasaki, the Wrestler who defeated Sting for the WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title, was New Japan’s representative. Sting avenged his loss to Sasaki by defeating him with the Scorpion Deathlock to win the World Cup of Wrestling for WCW. Sting still had another Match to Wrestle at Starrcade ‘95. A Triangle Match between Sting, Ric Flair, and Lex Luger still remained. The winner of that Match would go on to Wrestle Randy Savage for the WCW World Heavyweight Title in the nights Main Event. Ric Flair won the Match when both Sting and Luger got counted out. A feud between Sting and Luger seemed imminent, however, things turned out another way.
